Information on the documents you will be required to present in the event of a possible restitution 

The following documents demonstrating power of attorney and right of inheritance are required before a restitution can occur. These documents are required by law, but also serve to protect the beneficiary.

• a notarized copy of a will (if available) of the person who was divested of the work as a direct result of National Socialist persecution (in the case of a foreign testament, the document should include an apostille and a notarized translation), or a certificate of inheritance (Erbschein) or, in the case of an inheritance under foreign law, a certificate of inheritance recognizing this foreign law, issued by a German court (Fremdrechtserbschein);
• a notarised copy of all other testaments (in the case of foreign testaments, the documents should include an apostille and a notarized translation) for all deceased heirs or beneficiaries after this person, or the appropriate certificates of inheritance (Erbscheine), or, in the case of an inheritance under foreign law, certificates of inheritance recognizing this foreign law, issued by a German court (Fremdrechtserbscheine);
• the original documents granting power of attorney for all beneficiaries stated in the aforementioned certification, entitling their legal representatives to carry out all actions necessary in connection with the restitution of the artwork, including, if necessary, its receipt.
